Welcome to saveeastcampus.com
This site serves as a clearing house of information about the Historic East Campus in Kalamazoo, and what can be done to save it. Western Michigan University (WMU) has been working for years on a solution to restore its original campus that sits atop Prospect Hill overlooking downtown Kalamazoo. Many in the community were excited to hear that the campus would be restored a few years ago, and they were subsequently shocked in December of 2012 to hear an announcement that the vast majority of the campus was being demolished to make way for parking and greenspace. There have been more questions than answers since this time, and citizens and alumni have been left wondering why so much of the campus must be demolished. The plans laid out by WMU in December 2012 seem to defy logic and many are left flabbergasted as to why so much parking is needed on the hill if only a small portion is to be rehabilitated, even fearing that this space will be primarily utilized for tailgating as noted in the original MLive article on the plans.
If this campus is to be saved, it will take serious action and response from the community to let WMU know that their current plans are unacceptable. While economic realities may make the perfect solution difficult to reach, there is not a shred of doubt that better solutions could be reached within the context of the economic realities of this project.
